Dental Implants
A dental implant consists of a titanium rod, abutment (support collar) and crown which together form a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or in combination to replace multiple missing teeth.
The first part of the process is to fix the titanium rod in place in a prepared socket in the jaw-bone. The natural bone then fuses around the implant to form an extremely strong anchor in a process known as osseo-integration. This can take from 4 – 6 weeks so patience is needed to ensure that the process is successful. Finally, the abutment is fixed in place to act as a support for the dental crown.
A dental implant functions exactly like a natural tooth and is considered to be a much better alternative than traditional dentures for replacing missing teeth. Our patients report that they are able to eat a full range of foods, smile without embarrassment and generally enjoy a new found confidence!
